There are times people simply want garden buildings that are intended to serve a purpose, such as to house tools or lawn equipment.  Unfortunately, it is not always in the best interest of the property owner to put up tool sheds or storage sheds that are cheaply constructed and look like something that would house a backwoods whiskey still.  In most cases, homeowners who find a need to construct garden buildings are looking for something that is not only functional but attractive as well.

Timber garden buildings add rustic charm and actually “look” like structures that are meant to be there.  You can always spot those metal tool sheds and for some reason they tend to feel out of place.  It’s like it draws the attention away from the lovely home or garden and all you see is that hunk of metal sitting there on the lawn or at the end of the driveway.  When garden sheds are crafted from wood they add to the ambiance rather than detracting from it.

Timber garden sheds can be painted any color as well.  You can stain them natural wood colors and add a protective weatherized coating or you can paint them whatever colors you want that will complement your home.  You can use them for a garden office and you wouldn’t feel like you were working in a mini mobile home like you would if you constructed your home office from one of those pre-fab aluminum garden sheds.

When you get tired of working or just need to take a quick break you could step outside with a cup of coffee or glass of ice tea and rest a moment in your gazebo.  It paints an entire picture for you.  You have your lovely garden office and beside it your sanctuary, your gazebo.  In fact, if the work gets too stressful, forget the tea and coffee and pour yourself a glass of wine.  Who cares about the work anyway, it will still be there tomorrow and the day after that as well.

If you are going to build timber garden buildings that you will be in for any length of time you would probably want to pour a concrete slab for the foundation.  This would protect any electronics, such as your computer, from moisture that naturally comes up from the ground.  It would actually be rather like a small dwelling and it can be wired for electricity, insulated so that you could regulate temperature, and you could even install drywall so that it actually would resemble a mini cottage.  Or, you could simply build one of the tiny garden log cabins.  That’s an interesting thought!

What it all boils down to is that it is important to pay attention to what the end result will look like.  You don’t want garden buildings that will make your home look like the city dump.  If you are going to put something up on your property, consider garden buildings that add a touch of rustic charm.

Where to Build your Garden Buildings

Beautiful Garden Summerhouse

Beautiful Garden Summerhouse

When being creative with your gardens with different types of constructions like log cabins, swimming pools, sauna cabins, artificial waterfalls and other such garden buildings it is important to understand the location in your garden where they would optimize the reason for which you are building them. Garden buildings require strategic positions and need to maintain rules and norms of construction. It is important to know where you are supposed to build what in your garden to ensure that you understand the consequences of the construction. The surroundings of the garden building also matter a lot and the effects of the construction on your neighbors or to your own residence have to be calculated before the actual construction begins.

For a garden workshop or office, you will have to ensure that they receive ample amount of sunlight and easy access for maintenance. This means that you will have to construct both those garden buildings at a place leaving out enough space in all directions of the building. For summerhouses, the view of the surrounding or the rest of the garden is important. Build your summerhouse in such a way so that you are able to have a good view of the garden.

In case you are building a log cabin or other such enclosed garden building, do ensure that you build it in such a location so that you are able to access it from all sides for future maintenance of the establishment. You will also have to consider the surrounding growth of trees or other vegetation and ensure that their growth does not hamper any of your garden buildings.

For offices or workshops, you may need to supply electricity to the building for your convenience. Design them accordingly so that providing electricity to these garden buildings does not become a difficult job. Keep in mind that sloping or elevated land is useful for creating artificial waterfalls to decorate your garden. Flat and level land can be used for constructing summerhouses, workshops, offices or a garage. The placement of these garden buildings is also important with garages tending to face towards the front of your home and allowing cars to access the road while offices, workshops, or summerhouses tend to be at the back of the house.

The type of garden buildings that you can construct depends largely on the position of your garden. If you have a garden in the front of your house, you can usually opt for a playhouse or a garage and if it is at the back, you can obviously opt for a summerhouse, a swimming pool or a sauna cabin. Keep in mind that you should consider all the important aspects of your garden and maintain the proper rules and regulations for your garden buildings. That way, garden buildings will be fun and practical, while keeping your peace of mind!

Garden Buildings Explained

Garden Buildings

Garden Buildings

Let me start with a fact – garden buildings can be very important for a garden. They can make you garden look better or worse. They come in many different types and there are many different ways to place them in your garden. You need to know how to place them in your garden so that your garden maintains a good amount of space for your flowers and also have enough space for the garden buildings so you can take full advantage of both worlds.

First, you need to understand the different garden buildings so you can know what garden buildings you will actually need. It doesn’t matter if they are there for you to enjoy, or because they just makes your garden look better. One popular garden building is the shed. A shed can be put in a garden to keep storage of different items such as gardening equipment or tools. There are wooden sheds and also metal garden sheds. You can choose a garden shed according to your taste. Another popular garden building is the log cabin.

This is only used for homes that have fire places and burn log to keep warm instead of a heater. Basically, log cabins are mostly wooden garden buildings where you can keep wood for your fire place. They vary in size depending on how much firewood you are looking to store. Believe me when I say that I have seen log cabins big enough to be used as guest houses, and others that can only hold a day’s log. I would venture a guess that almost all houses that have a garden and a fireplace will most likely have log cabins as well.

There are also people that consider garden garages as a type of garden building as well. I don’t see how, yet some people do. You see, it all depends on how you define the term garden buildings. To me, these buildings have to look nice, be useful, but also be within the area of your garden. As such, I wouldn’t consider placing garages within the category. Then again, as you know, a garage is where you park your car, and sometimes people have their garages next to a garden, so it does make some sense.

If you have children, you may want to consider building some outdoor amusement for them in your yard, such as swings, which would also be considered garden buildings. Children will love those, since they are close to home where they can play and they can even invite friends over to play with them as well. A treehouse can be great for that purpose, but you should be cautious when building one if you plan to let your children hang around them because wood can sometimes break. The good news is that there are treehouse kits in the market that prolong their life time and make them a lot safer nowadays. Of course, you could build one of those garden sheds on the ground and have it serve the same purpose as a treehouse would. That way, you won’t have to worry every time you see your child climbing up a wooden ladder.

The above are just some examples of different garden buildings, and there are many more not mentioned here. Honestly, nobody can really list all the types of garden buildings because anyone can come up with a new type to satisfy a purpose that they have. Once you figure out which one suits your needs best, you can start planning for the proper size and placement for them in your garden. It is very important that you don’t overcrowd your space with too many garden buildings. Just build enough to enhance the looks of your garden and make your life easier! Because no matter the type, that is what they are meant to do!
